are using.
If you are using Internet Browsers as your email client - you
cannot assign a browser as a default email client - because it is
not an email client - it is an Internet Browser. ;-)

Unless you start using an actual email client - you will not be able to
choose a non-email client as your default email client.
Outlook Express, Outlook, ThunderBird, etc... all legitimate email clients
and all can be used to IMAP or POP with GMail. If you like getting your
email via the web interface - I suggest IMAP on a client.
I'm just curious as to why you suggest IMAP rather than POP, since
I've personally never used IMAP and know next to nothing about it.
Simply because of the way GMail is utilized by most (via web) and how IMAP
can directly reflect what one would see via the web and POP would have to be
manually setup and maintained in order to do so.
I have managed gmail using both POP and IMAP and if you do occassionally
access GMAIL via the web (which I do and I would bet many others do as
well) - to me the IMAP is a better representation of the GMail layout and
makes it easy to manage folders and such so that everything looks the same
when you access it either way.
