With NT4 and poledit, I could have standardized
departmental folders/icons on the desktop. How do I go
about this with AD & GPO?

Much thanks in advance.

Hi Kurt:
Take a look at 323368 HOW TO: Assign a Mandatory User Profile in Windows
2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323368

This should do it for you.

You had any luck with it.. I am also trying to do the
same..
Thanks

From what I've heard you can do this.
It's possible that you could make your own .adm admin template that
makes a special folder on the desktop, like the My Documents Folder is a
special folder.

I'd use a custom Admin template because that makes it very very easy to
roll out across a company as you can just include it in your Group Policies.

www.Regedit.com has info about making special folders.
support.Microsoft.com has information about making your own Admin Templates.

I am actually doing this. I created a folder for each department on a
network share and then created a policy that applied to each dept OU that
redirects the desktop to that dept's folder. I set permissions to only
allow the users to read the folders (so they can't change the desktop for
their whole dept).

This works quite well if you have a standardized dept desktop, not so well
if everyone has different jobs within the dept. :)

My dept group policies also control the logon scripts to map each dept's
mapped drives.
