in the process of bringing a new dc online, after installing win2k does
the machine need to be added to the domain prior to running dcpromo?

would running dcpromo on a machine prior to adding it to the domain
cause any detrimental affects on active directory / replication?

i ask as i have done this and seem to be having odd replication problems
throughout the wan but am not sure if the replication problems were
there before this dc was brought online

i dont think so when u do not add member server to domain
before dcpromo, during promoting to dc dcpromo joins your
server to domain..

It doesn't matter, really. I always remove the machine from the domain
before I run dcpromo, as in the past, i've had some wierd errors with the
promotion wizard.

well, makes me feel more comfortable that it shouldnt have been this
that would have caused our problems ;)

in fact if our wan, dns and replication wasnt working properly at the
time i promoted the server it would explain the sam errors i had in the
event logs that related back to not being able to contact the rid master
which is at HQ over the wan ... and why the machine account for the
promoted server didnt appear at HQ at all but was fine with my local
lans DCs

i'll have to gather all the info and post another thread regarding our
replication issues
