Adding a user to a security group does not result in instant authorization.

To achieve authorization I simply have them log out and then back in
to get their SID modified to include the necessary group information.
Is there a better way to do this, without logging out? Is there a
time limit?

Your token is built when you log in. Any group membership change depends on
a login and the replication of that change to the authenticating DC.
