I just added a western digital 120gb hard drive to my
sony vaio computer. the "bios" recognizes the drive on
start up, with the part number, size etc.
the drive shows up as the slave, with my original drive
as master.....as I set it that way.....

the "device manager" recognizes the drive, and says "this
device is working properly"

however, there's no sign of the hard drive either on "my
computer", or "explore" menu.....

any help would be greatly appreciated....

this an xp quirk. you have to "mount" the drive. Go to
my computer, right click, click on manage, this opens a
new window "computer management. Find disk management
and click to open. Find your missing drive - it should
be there - and double click! Good Luck

The hard drive cannot appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer
until it
has been partitioned and formatted. Right-click My Computer > Manage
Management. Create and format partition(s) on the second hard drive
as
desired.

A new disk needs to have a partition (or partitions) made on it and
formatted to go with whatever operating system is in use. Go to Control
Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk Management and
look lower right for the graphic of the drive. R-click in the
Unallocated space and take 'create partition'

Quite likely you will make only one - but consider your use of the disk,
and whether having two or three partitions of different sizes might be
more suitable.
