Hello,

I would like to add a second DNS server into my W2K
domain, I have a problem with one my my domain
controllers, DC1 - runs DNS, it keeps locking up. No
errors are eveidnt in the event viewer, the main issue is
that when it locks up the users in the domain cannot map
their network drives(thought DC2 would help with this).
Would adding DNS to DC2 help when DC1 is not functioning?

Thanks - John

post the ipconfig /all for your DC and the domain name from ADU&C.

You have an underscore in your domain name, underscores are not a legal
character in domain names.
That being said, I'm not sure this would cause a lock up but I cannot say it
won't. You are pointing to yourself for DNS how DC2 should point to DC1 for
DNS you can use DC2 as the alternate DNS. Having two DCs pointing to
themselves for DNS can cause DNS to become an island. But still I cannot say
one way or the other if this will cause a lock up.
Just to verifiy everything is working as it should run dcdiag /e /v from
both machines and netdiag /v from both. Look the outputs over for errors.

Thanks for the information, I want to install DNs on DC2,
I only have DNS running on DC1. When I install DNS on DC2
do I make it AD intergrated?

Thanks

If the zone on DC1 is AD integrated when you install DNS on DC2 the zone
will be replicated automatically, you won't need to create the zone. In fact
you would not want to create the zone, if you try to create the zone as AD
integrated it will tell you that the zone already exists in Active
Directory.
