Insert your XP CD if it is a version that contains SP2, which it would seem
to do as you have SP2 installed by default..

Greetings all.
I have a new PC with Microsoft MCE 2005 installed, including the 2 install
CDs.

I want to install a FAX device. When I try to do that from Printers to add
a Fax, I get a dialog asking for the SP2 CD. All I have is the XP install
CDs which I tried to use.

The system came with SP2 installed.

Is there a circumvention for this, or do I have to download the SP2 image?

Thanks.

Thanks, but I did try that.
The dialog that pops up is looking for a .INF file (as I recall). I tried
both of the MCE install disks that came with the system. However, the
dialog that prompts for the disk does explicitly say "Insert the SP2 disk".
(or words to that affect).

I guess I'll try downloading the SP2 image and point to it.

Thanks.

it sounds like it wants the drivers for the FAX machine; is there a CD that
came with it, or can you get to the manufacturers site and download the
file?

I have another machine with XP Pro. On that one, I just added the Fax and
all went well. However I did do that before I put SP2 on that machine.

Thanks.

The disks you have may be an image of the system rather than actual install
CDs. If that's the case, contact the manufacturer and find out how you're
supposed to install additional features.

Or, if you know the name of the file that the computer is looking for, so a
search for it. Those files may be in a folder somewhere on the computer.

James,
1. If the PC came with a modem, check if there are CD's for the modem, there may be a fax program there. Or place the Modem CD in, to the find the driver for the modem.

2. If that does not work. Check the HDD or XP CD, see if there is a folder labeled "I386" (w/o quotes). When the fax installer asks for the driver, direct the search to that folder. Such as:

C:\I386 or X:\I386 (Where X=CD-ROM Drive)

3. Check the PC manufacturer's website for a modem or fax driver download.

XP refers to genuine Microsoft CD's which the vendor chooses not to supply,
preferring the 'recovery' style CD's instead..

Thanks for the tips. There is a FAX program that came with the modem. I
installed that and I can fax.

I am still a bit confused though. I have a brand new system with Windows
MCE installed (2005 / SP2). Also, I have the official OEM CDs' for the
machine'.

The dialog that pops up says: "Please insert the CD labeled Windows XP
Professional Service Pack 2 CD into your CD-ROM...'. Not sure if that's
incorrect, since I do have MCE installed.
Also, I tried to install 'Additional Windows Components', and select FAX.
But alas, again, I get the same dialog.

I've got the FAX going, so I'm going to go with that. Someday I'll figure
it out. Perhaps the dealer that loaded the PC did so with a version of MCE
that did not have SP2, and installed it from a separate SP2 CD.

Thanks for all the tips.

Can you expound on that? The two CDs that came with the machine look
'official'. They are labelled 'Windows XP Media Center Edition' & 'version
2005'. The CDs have a holographic label, that when tilted, shows 'Microsoft
Windows XP' all over the background.

Also a label that says 'For distribution with a new PC only. For support,
contact the manufacturer of your PC'.
When I insert CD 1, I get the 'Install XP' menu. Do you think these are
'recovery' CDs?

No, I am not suggesting that you have some unique form of recovery CD..

The SP2 CD in your case is the main installation CD, presumably #1.. it
could be that when your fax installation is looking for files off of the CD,
it is not pointing at the correct path..
