I have several presentations w/a background that I want to save and use on my presentations. How do I "copy" it to my options for backgrounds

Open the files that have the desired backgrounds. Click "File", "Save as",
change the "Save as type" dropdown to JPGs, then save your file. Create a
new blank presentation, click the "View" menu, select "Master", "Slide
Master". Here you have two choices:

1. Click the "Format" menu, select "Background", click the dropdown arrow
and select "Fill Effects", click the "Picture TAB, browse to your file and
select it.

2. Click the "Insert" menu, select "Picture", "From File". Browse to your
file and select it.

Make any other changes you want in the Slide Master. When done, close the
Slide Master view, click the "File" menu, select "Save as", click the "Save
as type" dropdown and select "PowerPoint Templates (*.pot)". Give it a
name. Repeat for other backgrounds you like.

Now when you open PowerPoint, your templates will be available under the
"General" templates TAB.

You don't even need to copy it - create any presentation and then opt to
apply a new master to it (in PowerPoint 2002/03, you'll choose Format |
Slide Design). Click the Browse link in the Slide Design taskpane and
navigate to the PPT file that contains the background.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

The built-in help for PowerPoint includes some instructions for how to
create new (or customize existing) templates (designs, masters). Did you
find this information insufficient or too difficult to locate (we are
always looking for ways to improve our built-in product assistance)? The
main thing to remember is that editing/creating custom design templates is
just like editing a slide except that you edit the Slide/Title master(s)
instead of actual slides (View -> Master -> Slide Master).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide additional assistance about (or features which
facilitate the) creation and/or modification of PowerPoint designs, don't
forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
