I've tried adding an avi movie to a slide show but I'm
unable to find the movie icon or to play the movie.

I'm using Powerpoint 2000, and the movie has about 25
frames. I used the following instruction sequence to add
the movie;

From the Insert Menu; select "Movies and Sounds";
select "Movie from file", double click on the movie (I
know the movie works).

Then, no movie icon.

thanks,
-LH

Do you get any kind of error message?

Test the AVI for PPT compatibility by going to Start/Run and typing in
mplay32.exe (windows 2000 or XP) or mplayer.exe (windows 98). Does it
play there?

The movie works ok from mplay32.exe.

do you see either the first frame of the movie or an icon on the screen in
the slide-edit view ("Normal" view)? If so, right mouse click on the icon
and choose "play movie" to test. If you don't see the first frame or an
icon, then it's likely that you don't have the movie properly inserted.
The movie works ok from mplay32.exe.

Since I don't see either the movie's first frame or icon,
it must be the insert procedure.

This what I've tried:
Select Normal view.
Select a slide in my ppt doc.
From the Menu bar, select Insert.
From the Insert drop down, select Movies and Sound.
From Movie and Sound, select Movie from file.
Double click on one of the movies listed in the Insert
Movie window.
Look for the movie icon on the same slide in Normal view.

FYI:
1. My avi movies have a Real One icon (if this matters).
2. All movies work with mplay32 and Real One.

This is unlikely, but just in case... have you tried inserting the movie in
a completely blank powerpoint slide (no template, no background, etc.) just
in case some useful information is being obscured by whatever else is on the
slide?

Your steps are correct, and since the AVI plays in mplay32.exe, you
should be fine with it in PPT, too.

Interestingly enough, I just went to double-check them, and I had the
same result when I tried to insert an AVI into PPT. Nothing happened.
PPT paused for a second, then I saw the mouse's arrow. I could click on
stuff in the slide and on the menus, but I had no first frame (nor any
movie/sound icons) on the slide.

So I tried inserting a different AVI, and it inserted with no
difficulties.

Sooooo, back to the problem AVI. I realized its name was .avi Just .avi
Nothing before the extension! Now, how I got *that* name on the file,
I've no clue, but when I renamed it to 1.avi it inserted into PPT with
no problems.

What's the name of your AVI file? If you rename it to something with no
spaces or odd characters, will it insert?

The Real One icon could be a clue.

The real one player can tend to "take over" the playing of movies.
Powerpoint and the real one player do not get along in my experience.

I suggest trying to re-association AVI files with the original media
player....the instructions for which escapes me at present.

Also...where did the AVI clips originate/ come from?

Cheers
