Someone gave me a 811.b wireless network card. I was trying to install it be
some major concept issues have confused me. Normally, do you set up the card
to point to a specific router or dsl modem? If not, what would keep me from
picking up a neighbor's ISP? Or is it supposed to be like that so if I going
into a wireless, yuppie-filled, coffee shop I can get online without
changing anything? Is there a web site called Setting up a Wireless Ethernet
Card using your Home Wireless VPN Router for Dummies?

The wireless connection could be to any router that allows access. For privacy, you
want to configure "your" router to use WEP which uses encryption to prevent users
that do not have the WEP key from accessing or viewing the data in that connection.
WEP is not 100 secure but it is much better than no security protocol at all. WPA is
the new standard and is much more secure. It is the responsibility of the owner of
the wireless router to secure their network or not. You may see other networks
available, but may not be able to access any of them unless they are meant to be
open. You may find it helpful to go to the manufactures website for your wireless
card and read the documentation for it on how to configure it. The link below may
help. --- Steve

Generally, you should be able to to scan available networks. Look for a
networks tab perhaps. The only thing that would keep you from using
your neighbors ISP, is they may have WEP enabled, they may not be
broadcasting their SSID. They may let you use their bandwidth if you
have really nice neighbors.

Good Luck
