Dirms

Overview:

The name stands for Do It Right MicroSoft. DIRMS is a command-line
application designed to perform defragmentation of a drive with
specific attention towards some of the limitations of the built-in
defragmenter. Specifically, it helps defragment disks without leaving
interstitial spaces between files, which can cause defragmentation if
files are written across those spaces. DIRMS runs as a low-priority
process and can be scheduled to run at any time, so using it does not
interfere with regular system behavior.

Has anyone here actually used this on win98se or winXP? If so, how
well does it work? Any comments?

Dirms does not work on Win98 or WinME. I'm using it on a Windows
2000 system and it does it's job very well.

I use it with XP. It works very well and has a selection of option
switches which allow you be as thorough/fast/unobtrusive as you need.

Works well on Xp, does not work on 98/Me

It is my weapon of choice for new installs I do for friends. The gui is
OK I guess, but the basic command is so easy... why bother? I can run
an instance of it for each active partition at the same time in command
line mode.

I agree. I prefer command-line tools. I do most of my file/disk tasks
using 4DOS (command.com replacement) and batch files which is why
DIRMS caught my attention.

Thanks to all for the comments.
