Add Word98 to WindowsXP

I would like to add Word98 to my WindowsXP. However, when I insert th
Word disc, I'm told I must add the software in MS-Dos mode. Not only d
I not know how to do this, but I'm frightened that if I proceed, I wil
really mess something up! Any suggestions on how to add the Word9
software to WindowsXP? I will be grateful for any help, as I was aske
to assist my son's school with a project, and Notepad just won't cut it

I've heard of Word 97 and Word 2000. I've even run Outlook 98. However I
have not heard of Word 98 (or Office 98). Are you certain of the version
you are attempting to install? Is it possible you are attempting to
install Microsoft WorKs? Was the software included with a computer, or
was the software purchased separately in a Full or Upgrade retail box?

I'm rather puzzled that an application that is only able to run in
Windows would want to be installed in DOS mode. Are you using a version
distributed on a CD or on magnetic disks? Is the installation on
original Microsoft media? Is the error message the result of the
auto-run when a CD is inserted, or are you running an executable file on
the installation media (respond with file name if so)?

Have you tried installing the software with the control panel's
Add/Remove Programs applet?

If you can't get Works or Word running, try OpenOffice Writer available
without charge at http://www.openoffice.org/

Any version of Word from 1995 on should work with XP...
Probably even older versions...
but there is no Word98 so you must be using the wrong CD

MS Word (Office)98 is Macintosh software not Windows.

THAT would certainly cause installation difficulties if you tried to
install it on a Windows XP system!!

Dumb me! Thanks to the wonderful response, I looked again, and sure
enough, my sister gave me a Windows 98 disc. I'm so glad I didn't do
anything too stupid. I appreciate all the great advice.

Word 98 was specifically designed for use on Apple computers, and
cannot be installed on a Windows based computer.

If you still need something better than Notepad, you can try the suggested
OpenOffice, which is a very nice FREE office solution, and is VERY (if not
fully) compatible with Microsoft Office software.

Another option is to try using WordPad. It has many of the nicer features
not available in Notepad, and is already installed on your system, as it is
included in nearly all Windows installations (not sure about Vista.) It's
simple, yet powerful enough for most things, including adding in-line
images, etc. There is no spell checker, which is one downfall, but it is
functional if you don't need too many bells and whistles. You can find this
under Start, Programs (All Programs), Accessories, WordPad.

The Only "Office 98" I've heard of was the edition for the Macintosh
computer.
But for Windows, there was MS Word 5.0 (for DOS) then Word for Windows 3.1,
then with the intro of Windows95t came Word95, then Word97, Word 2000, Word
XP and Word 2003 & Word 2007.
