add/remove programs

I have been messing around with my comp trying to clean it up a bit and I
think I inadvertently removed an essential file, now when I try to use the
"add or remove programs" option in control panel, all I get is an hour glass
for a second or two and then nothing. What did I do? Is there anyway short
of deleting it all and reinstalling everything that I can do to get this
prog to work again?

Try this first...

Stick your XP install CD in the drive...

Click START|RUN and type...
"sfc /scannow" (no quotes, and note the space between "c" and "/")
<enter>
 
It asks me for a service pack 1 cd and I have found out these are only
available in north America
