Add/Remove Programs and System Patches

How do I remove the files from the installation of a
security patch or other windows update and get rid of the
corresponding entry in the Add/Remove Programs window
without uninstalling the update.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I want to remove the uninstall directories such as:
C:\WINNT\$NtUninstallKB810217$
which serve no purpose, as far as I can tell, once it's
determined that a patch is not going to be uninstalled.
It's easy enough to delete the files, but then the
patch's entry in the Add/Remove Program menu will remain.

I can search the registry and delete information related
to the uninstall, but that's hardly elegant and I would
probably miss something after dozens of patches, so I'm
looking for a more conventional and safer method.

Hotfixes (if that's what you're asking about) are the critical
updates (mostly security-oriented) that you've been downloading
all along. Do not remove these, or you will put back the security
exposures they were designed to fix. You can however delete their
backup files. See

BOBE711 - SINCE UPDATING TO SP2 MY ADD/REMOVE PGMS NO LONGER GIVES ME A COMPLETE LIST OF CURRENT PROGRAMS. THEREFORE, I CAN'T REMOVE THE PGMS THAT ARE NOT ON THE LIST.
