when i choose 'show hidden devices' in the subject window i get whole bunch
of duplicate devices on screen - is there a way to remove them all
automatically (opposed to removing them all by hand) ?

the point is that i have a whole bunch of them...

Simply deleting the icons isn't enough. You have to uninstall the
programs/files they refer to. Sometimes uninstalling isn't enough either -
you have to edit the registry, too.

Good luck.

OK, I'll make nice, and simply tell you the facts of life:

To add/remove hardware, you add/remove drivers and/or resource files, and
references in the registry to the hardware and the drivers. Some hardware
doesn't have drivers etc associated with it, but all hardware has registry
references associated with it. BTW, you must uninstall the hardware before
you physically remove it from the system.

You could try selecting the icons with the mouse, and deleting all the icons
selected, but there is no guarantee whatsoever that this will result in a
clean removal from your system. On the contrary, the odds are you will have
some mess left behind.

If you have several icons all referring to the same piece of hardware, you
somehow installed several instances of it. (The most likely by my guess is
that you clicked OK buttons in pop-ups.) Uninstall _all_ the instances, then
shut down, disconnect the hardware physically, reboot. If you need the
hardware, shut down again, connect the hardware again, reboot, The New
Hardware wizard should pop up, and you can install the hardware.

If later you get a pop up asking to install the hardware that you have
installed, you have some major problems, and merely uninstalling and
reinstalling the hardware won't cure them. Make careful notes of the symptoms
described in the pop-up and / or the behaviour of the system before the
pop-up (including what you did or tried to do), and post back. Someone may be
able to help.
