Add/remove blank

When I open the add /remove programs from the control panel, programs
are not shown.

The message "please wait while list is being populated" is displayed
but waiting over one hour does not produce anything

How can I correct this problem

Windows XP Home with SP2 and all updates

Usually this indicates a bad entry in the Uninstall registry key and/or
Hotfix registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix

check out in safe mode... and tell me how long does it takes to get the
list...
