I installed Firefox on my Windows vista, but despite this I'm not able to
see it in the default program list. How can I add it?

Thanks
Andrea

I think I have read somewhere that at the moment Firefox can not be set as
the default browser.

It is going to take a few updates to get it totally Vista compatible.

I see it my list. Check under 'Set Programs access and computer defaults',
see what's going on there.

Where is the 'Set Programs access and computer defaults' folder or item?
Did you mean the Default Programs?

When you click and open "Default Programs" from the
start menu, there should be 4 options listed. The first
is "Set Your Default Programs", you said you tried that
and did not see Firefox listed. Firefox is listed there for me.

The last option in the "Default Programs" window is
'Set Programs access and computer defaults' -
click that and have a look around. Look under
"Custom"> "Default Browser"
see if "Enable access to this Program"
is checked for Mozilla Firefox and if Firefox is also checked
there as the default.

-Michael

Sorry ... I found that.
Ok using the second options - Non Microsoft - in "Set programs access and
default programs" I was able to finally see Firefox set up as default
browser, but it has removed Internet explorer and Windows mail at all.
Unfortunately also in this way, in the first option - Set your default
programs - Firefox doesn't appear.

Third custom option brings explorer as default in any case.

A little step forward.

Any other idea?

Do you have UAC turned on? If you do, try reinstalling Firefox
by right clicking on the setup file and "Run as Administrator",
Firefox should ask you during the setup or first run if you want it
to be the default browser. See what happens.

UAC turned on or turned off with Firefox installed doesn't change anything.
Using the custom or non microsoft set, I can get - as I said - Firefox as
default browser but HTTP Protocol still continue to appear as openable by
Internet Explorer.

Actually I'm a UAC disabled state. I try to reinstall Firefox again.

Nothing to do ... Firefox still continue to be the default ... but http
protocol will managed by IE.
This mean that all e-mail link will be opened by IE ... and so on.

Also continuing to don't display it in the Default Programs.

It's a mystere that MS will solve with the first SP I think.

Go back into "Default Programs" from the Start Menu,
click the second choice "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"-
first have a look at what .html is set to. You can double-click it and change
it. Then scroll all the way to the bottom and under "Protocols" see what
is listed for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, MAILTO.

This is what I've done as first test. Associating .htm and .html files let
windows vista open that document with the new software specified, but still
retain the protocol for IE7.
Changing to Custom or Non Microsoft, changes the protocol too, all execpt
HTTP.

Some last suggestions, I do hope you get it
worked out.

In IE's options, uncheck "Tell me if Internet Explorer
is not the default browser"

This is what a quick google came up with-
google can be your friend.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0.0.1/releasenotes/#vista
Firefox can not yet be set as the default browser on Vista. See this bug for more information.

Take care,

I googled before posting ... and this is the second test I done, before
trying to play with default programs and UAC.

Uau ... new OS new problems :)

It's incredible how on a simple thing like this, MS has lost itself in a
water glass.

I'll wait for SP1 :)

Andrea

I noticed that on link you suggested - this is new for me - they say Fixed.
but there is not patch to download, just some code that I don't know how to
compile and run ... Am I missing something?

You would use that to open a file with a specific program.

I have Firefox 2.0.0.1 installed, it shows in open with and reports it is
the default browser in tools>options->checknow.
However MS being MS if you double click *.html in "windows vista file
manager" it will still load in IE.

If you right click on the html file do you get an option to "run with..."?
If so, that dialog has a check box to make the program change permanent.
