When I click on the add printer wizzard I get the above
message. The print spooler says it is running and I have
started again just for good measure.

There is no printer plugged in at this point but I have
not experienced issues on other systems in the past.

try the sfc /scannow trick

Well, if Conny's problem is indeed that double-clicking the Add Printer icon
results in nothing, then you have the same sympton. Hers is really
interesting because it's not consistent. Yours is probably the usual case of
some install program futzing around with printui.dll (which hosts the Add
Printer Wizard). Running "sfc /scannow" from the command line usually fixes
that.

Having same problem. Tried sfc /scannow as recommended by
A.M. but not fixed.
Some background:
Shortly after successfully installing printer (Epson
C60), XP started hanging and rebooting. Found that CPU
useage was 100% continually by Services & System.
Investigated using msconfig and found that Print Spooler
was culprit. Then, in a mystery to me, Print Spooler
disappeared from the Services list as remains even after
doing sfc /scannow. Can I fix it w/o doing System Restore
or re-installing WinXP?

I was able to get the Print Spooler back by doing the
following:

Click Start, then Control Panel, go to
Performance and Maintenance, then Administrative
Tools, select Services then locate Print Spooler - Right
click on print spooler then left click on restart.

That being done, trying to install the printer caused a
crash and after restarting the CPU useage was back up to
100% again. There appears to be something about trying
to do the printer install that makes Print Spooler
malfunction. And, yes, I did update the Epson C60
drivers.
Any help would be appreciated.
