Hi,

I have XP Pro SP2 and IE6. I'm trying to change the font boldness on pages
such as http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/oh/hourly.html

(It's a National Weather Service page in this example)

I would like to make the font a little bolder or darker, similar to Arial
Black listed in Web Page Fonts, which I use. I assume this is done via
Tools - Internet Options - Fonts - Plain Text Fonts. The few listed in there
are not dark enough, so far Lucinda Console is the "boldest", but not quite
bold enough. I use a 32" TV as a monitor, and am trying to customize my
setting to what will display best. Is there a way of adding or downloading
more fonts to the list. I searched Google groups and found a couple people
asking this question, but found the answer given to be incomplete, by
choosing an already listed font, or by unticking Ignore Font Styles or Sizes
in Accessibilities, which seems to do nothing. Thanks much.

You would need to install a monospace font that meets your needs. I
have one, Dark Courier, that is somewhat darker than Courier New. It is
available from HP at:

If this is not good enough, you'll have to look around for another
monospace font that meets your needs.

Thanks. Actually this helped in general on most web pages, bolder and easier
to read, but I thought Plain Text Fonts would also help making bolder the
info on a page such as http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/oh/hourly.html but it
didn't.

How do I change fonts for something like that page? Any way of changing font
size under Tools - Internet Options - Fonts? Thanks again.

BTW, I recently switched back to IE as my default browser. I was using
FireFox for about 2 years due to all the security loopholes in IE, just
using IE when I really had to, but I discovered FF got more and more bloated
over time, and in Task Manager it shows it using 130K and more of my 374K
RAM. Simple web pages were taking 30 seconds to a minute to load, and I'm
using 4M down cable! The same page loads in a second or two with IE6, and IE
uses only about 7.5K in my Task Manager, not the 130+K FF uses now! I did
really like the tweakability of FF, I had all fonts and font sizes tweaked
to where I liked them, but I can't wait a half minute to a minute for many
simple web pages to load! I'll won't uninstall FF, I'll keep it for any
occasions I may need to use it.

It works with me, both for FF and IE.

Don't know why it does not work for you.

IE actually uses a lot more RAM than you think, as its core is loaded at
boot time, and the amount of RAM shown by Task Manager for IE does not
reflect this.

As for FF, web pages come up fast for the large majority of users. The
consensus in the FF community appears to be that (a) FF does have some
memory leak problems, and these are being rooted out, (b) many memory
problems are actually caused by extensions, and (c) the large amount of
RAM used by FF is unimportant if you have the RAM to spare. You can
reduce the amount of RAM be closing FF and reopening it, and/or byu
deleting its cache.
