add link to photo

Is there a way you can add a 'return to page link' after someone has clicked
on a thumbnail. at present users have to use the back arrow to return after
clicking on a thumbnail to see the original size?

No - the thumbnail is linked to the image, and you cannot add a hyperlink to
an image.
If you create a new page for each largeimage, and place the large image on
that page, then you can add back button, and any other navigation, etc. to
that page. The thumbnail must be changedto link to the page.
