Add Hardware Wizard

Hello,

I was hoping someone here may have the answer to this
since to this point I have been unable to come up with a
solution.

What I am attempting to do is uninstall my Radeon 9800
drivers and boot back into windows after the restart and
have the hardware wizard not automatically re-install the
drivers which I just uninstalled. What happens right now
to clarify is:

1) Desktop load
2) Icon appears in bottom right taskbar
3) "New Hardware Found"
4) "VGA Controller"
5) "Radeon 9800XT"
6) Install driver

I would prefer that the wizard did not automatically re-
install my drivers, and that I could therefore do it
manually. Is tehre any way to stop the wizard from
automatically discovering and installing the hardware on
setup? Is there a way to bring up the add hardware
wizard once it reaches step 2 or 3 above in order to
manually control the process and thus cancel it
manually? I am running out of ideas and the fact that
the Catalyst is picky about installing one version over
top of another makes things that much more difficult.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Hi

Pls try the following steps

1. Download the latest XP compatible catalyst drivers from ATI.com and save it to a specific folder
2. Right click on desktop/properties and change the resolution to VGA mode and then reboot
3. After reboot and the resolution is in VGA mode, go to control panel/add or remove program and remove the ATI drivers
4. Boot in safe mode (by pressing F8 key) and login as administrator, go to device manager.
If you find the ATI adapter, right click and select uninstall, click apply and OK, and then reboot
If you can only find the VGA adapter, go to step 5
5. Temporarily disable any antiVirus software. Open the specific folder for the downloaded catalyst drivers
Double click the icon and let it run to load the drivers automatically. Do not disturb until you are prompted to do so
6. After reboot, the new drivers should be properly installed. Adjust the display resolution if required

Hope it helps

Pete

Peter,

Sorry I'm a little confused by what you mean by step
two. It sounds like you mean to put the resolution to
640*480 and drop to say 256 colours. Im willing to give
it a shot but I wanted to be 100% sure about what you
were instructing me to do prior to doing it. Im just
confused as to how placing my desktop in 640*480 and
removing all adapters from device manager will stop the
hardware wizard from finding the device on startup.

Thanks again, just wanted to be sure,

Ryan

same problem with the 9600xt, was told i needed to find a program called driver cleaner and wipe all ati drivers. then windows will let you load the new driver

Redhut,

I believe that program you are looking for is on ATI's
website after you have selected OS/Family/Card and been
presented with the driver page. The only problem is, it
doesn't work the way it's advertised as far as I have
found up to this point.
