i was told that i needed to add the forward lookup pointer
to my dns so that my workstations can access the internet.

i have 2 questions regarding this.

1. how do i add the forward pointers?
2. why does this only affect win xp machines and not
win2k? point i am trying to make with this question is
that i dont need this forward pointer with a win2k wkstn,
but it seems i need it for win xp. any thoughts...

thanks

I think you're just asking about how to set up forwarders in DNS?

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202

All servers and workstations should specify *only* the internal
AD-integrated DNS server's IP address in their network settings. The
AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS
servers for external resolution. Perhaps some of your computers specify the
external/ISP's DNS servers in their IP configs - you should change that.
DHCP makes this a lot easier.

Someone gave you imprecise directions: You need to add
a "Forwarder".

(A "forward" resource record and a "PTR", pointer record
are actually TWO OTHER things that are unrelated to this.)
i have 2 questions regarding this.
1. how do i add the forward pointers?

In your DNS server, right-click\Properties, choose the forwarder
tab and add the ISP (or appropriate) DNS servers that your
clients WOULD have used if you had no internal DNS.
2. why does this only affect win xp machines and not
win2k?

It affect both. If they Win2000 machines are incorrectly configured
with a MIX of internal DNS and external DNS they may APPEAR to
work correctly but will experience either/both intermittant or partial
errors.
point i am trying to make with this question is
that i dont need this forward pointer with a win2k wkstn,

Yes, you do - if it will resovle internal addresses, especially if it
is participating in a DOMAIN.
but it seems i need it for win xp. any thoughts...

Yes -- you need them for all Win2000 class machines and with
the expected setup even for support of legacy WinNT and 9x
machines.

thanks i think that's what i am looking for. however,
when i tried to add the forwarder i can't because the
option is greyed out. it states that "forwarders are not
available on this server because it is the root server".

where should i go from here?

Delete the (automatically created) "." (root) zone.

You don't need it -- and you cannot add forwarders when it
exists.
