add/change cdrom

hi, got a dvd/cdrom which runs with ati rage card, but cant acces the cdrom
drive. if i installa new cdrom only drive, will i need to remove the other
one which dont work very well, goot w98 but when i put any cd disc in the
drive now nothing happens. any suggestions gratefully received. btw,should
it be connected as secondary master or slave please? thanx

All jumpers must be set correctly and with some Atapi Cdrom drives you
should set them to,"None" in the mother board Standard
BIOSsection.They will still work but cannot be booted from.

If you install a new drive, and assuming you have nothing else on that Eide
channel then No, you do not have to remove it. You can if you wish but you
don't have to. If you add a second CD-rom I would set it to slave (check to
make sure the first is set as master). If you put the new cd-rom as the
only one then set it as master.
 
If you are replacing a drive at the same address e.g. old secondary master with a new secondary master then you should first uninstall the old drive before installing the new one. Unlike old PCs, on a newer PC you can install a drive as slave on a cable without a master drive and even boot from it. You can install the new drive as slave and then later remove the old master if you want to.
