If you are dubious about the understanding of RAID then you might invest
your time into learning about it more so you can weigh in on whether or you
want to use it. Alternatively you may want to consider using that second 160
gb drive in an external enclosure with backup software to schedule regular
daily or weekly backups of your data, then you don't have to consider the
thought of RAID in the first place.
One of the biggest drawbacks of RAID, that I see, is that if you
suddenly get a virus that screws up your OS or destroys certain files then
so does the mirrored RAID drive.

You have only one drive on IDE1? You can buy a new HDD of whatever size you
feel you need and install it as master with your existing HDD as slave. You
really don't need RAID unless you want to treat both HDDs as one. I like the
idea of having two HDDs so I can keep valuable data on a separate HDD from my
OS. Also, I have a 1 GB partition at the start of my second HDD for the page
file.

why external, maybe he is running ide and therefore his cable has the
connector for a second internal drive.

Using an external drive allows for the backup advantage advantage of
removing the drive easily to take the files to an offsite location and
transferring the files to another system easily.

it might tie up a USB port, it raises the cost and the poster might not be
that bothered about transporting.....we must give the poster another option.

You dont need to use raid to combine the drives,
you can have two 80G drives in the system without raid.

160+G drives dont cost a lot more than 80G drives,
so it makes more sense to buy a 160+G drive now.

Amen! Whenever I find myself with too much HDD space, the condition never
lasts very long.

The OP should decide what size the biggest HDD he'd ever need would be and buy
one twice that size.

Are you SURE that your computer's Motherboard BIOS is new enough to be able
to detect a harddrive larger than 137 GB? That is the limit of BIOS's that
are more than just a couple of years old.

It is CHEAPER to buy a larger size and use it allongside your existing
drive (totals 240 GB), large harddrives are cheap these days.

However, if you wanted faster preformance (RAID0) or wanted to only use
the new drive to make backups (RAID1), then RAID would be an
interesting option. RAID0 combines the disk space, disk cache and speed
of both drives and presents them as a single disk drive to your OS.
Google up for "RAID" if you're interested in this option.
