Adapter for Laptop from eBay is OK?

Hi:
I need a spare adapter for my Laptop.

I went to the eBay site whether it has an Adapter I've been
looking for and found the similar one. I contacted a seller
whether the Adapter listed can be used for my Laptop.

He promptly responsed by e-mail, ... 'it's PERFECTLY fits
to my Laptop.' He has an excellent record in the eBay site
as a good seller.

However, since this is electrical, I started to concern
whether it's safe to buy from eBay site.

My question is:
Is it OK to buy an Adapter for my HP Laptop from a third-party?
Because, its maker, the HP is very expensive while an eBay-seller is half
its price.

Thanks for your 'honest' and 'candid' opinion on this regard.

There are 3 things to worry about when purchasing a replacement ac adapter
for a laptop. The voltage, the amperage (more is ok) and the connector
size. You can do some comparisons here: http://www.laptopacadapter.com/hp/
If the ac adapter fits the 3 criteria and the ebay seller has a good
reputation then I wouldn't have any qualms about buying it.

Hi:
Thanks for the response.

This is to be 'spare,' because I have an adaptor which came with the
Laptop. However, I want to use it both upstaire and downstaire
alternatively
when the family is not around. Keeping a 'spare' adaptor is for the sake of
convenience, maily because I want to save battery as much as possible, as
hearing that battery is awfully expensive.

eBay seller sounds a good one, but because of minimum 'electrical' stocks
in his seller-site, that concerns me, for just in case, like not working
good and the like.

Thanks for the site and your opinion. I really appreciate it.

Depending on the type of battery, using the AC all the time
can over-charge the battery and shorten the life. It
depends on whether the battery is old or new technology and
how the AC powers the computer. If the AC power can run
the computer without the battery installed or can be
switched so the battery is not over-charged, it should not
hurt the battery.

If the battery is not in the circuit as a "shock absorber
[capacitor]" the surges that come through the cheap adapter
can damage the computer.

Request the full specs on the adapter for such details as
ripple, voltage, output, must be enough to run the computer
and charge the battery. Ask if the will warranty the laptop
, in writing, for damage caused by their adapter?

Hi Jim Macklin:
Thanks all the help. I truly appreciate your informative response on
this regard.

As to the Laptop, I just purchased it a week ago, then it's new.

One thing over which I concern is, ... since the day I started to use
the Laptop, I mostly depend on an Adpator. I rarely use 'Battery,'
in fear that a life of Battery could shorten. However, it sounds other way
around, ... 'shorten' its life if not use the Battery. Should not depend on
ONLY an Adaptor, it that correct? Or, can I use an Apator with taking-off
a Battery? This might be a bit 'silly question' to ask, but, ...

Then, in my assumption, I should use both an Adaptor and Battery
alternatively,
like a Battery when use it in the upstair and an Adaptor when using in the
downstairs.
Normally, I use the Laptop for about two-hours' period that might be a
problem?

Your opinion on this would be appreciated.

Laptops with NiCd/NiMH batteries are typically in the 486/Pentium I
class...virtually everything since then is Li-Ion.

Most of the google hits in the other post refer to getting lots of time from
a charge, but a few go into making the battery live for a few years. Above
all else, Li-Ion batteries hate to be fully discharged. You have to do it
once to calibrate the charging circuits, but subsequently avoid it if you
can...Li-Ion does not need to ever fully discharge again. But you have a
battery-powered computer and a CPU that can throttle itself, so use it when
you have to.

Li-Ion also hates heat. If the charging circuits are built and calibrated
properly a Li-Ion should never overcharge/overheat, but they can get hot in
cars and if the battery is situated next to the hdd in the laptop.

I've had some Li-Ion batteries last six years (Inspiron 7000) and some last
2 years (Latitude D600). Just luck of the draw, mostly.

Batteries designed to be recharged need exercise, sort of
like the doctors who tell you to walk instead of taking the
elevator. The old rule for Nicad batteries was to run the
battery until it was discharged and then charge it or a
"memory effect" would happen and the battery would "assume"
that the small amount of charge was a full charge and then
the battery would only have the limited capacity of the
last partial charge.
Newer batteries are said to not have that problem.

Check the voltage/amperage on the one it's supposed to have. If those
match, it doesn't matter who you buy it from.
My cell phone company told me not to buy an adapter from WalMart, because it
might fit, but it will destroy the device if the voltage/amperage is wrong
(and void warranty if you didn't get the adapter from them).

You might want to read the latest news on the exploding laptop batteries and
make sure yours is relatively safe..

Jim, note that this exercise is not relevant to Lithium-Ion batteries. See
this online book: http://www.buchmann.ca/Chap10-page6.asp

Way more than anyone needs to know about batteries. :-)

Voltage must be the same, and the amperage (or wattage) must be the same,
*and can be higher*. Same applies to cell phone chargers, FWIW.

This is just like a desktop power supply...you can put a 400W unit into a
system that currently has a 300W supply. (no pun intended)
