When I installed some software, it said it couldn't
because I have a bad network adapter. It said to replace
or disable smc 10/100 card. The only problem is that I
have a Fast Ethernet card.

If I go to System Tools and System Information and click
on the Network, it says I have the Smc ez card. The only
problem, when expanding the Network adapter, it does
*not* show up in 'Device Manager'.

What's the problem?

Has the SMC card been installed in the past, and removed?

Have a read of this:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not
Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539

You might like to use this article to force Device Manager to show the
nonpresent devices.
The nonpresent ghosts should now reveal themselves.
You could then delete the nonpresent network adapters from device manager.
