adapter cards?

Hi I am reading a list of subjects/topics that I should be familiar to
take A+ test. In the section "Installation, Configuration and
Upgrading" it is mention that, I should be familiar withe
concept/model of "Adapter Cards". I search the internet and also use
www.whatis.com to figure out what are these adapter, but I guess I did
not get good answer.. they can be any PCI card (network, voice etc)!
this what I learned so far! am I right.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

PCI, AGP, ISA, EISA, PCMCIA, PC Card.
