Adaptec says this card driver is within XP but cannot
find it. Is it possible that it ois in the Professional
version and not the Hone Edition version? How can I get
such a driver if it does exist? Adaptec told me it is
within XP and HP answers is to contact my sales vendor...

Hi, Paul.

My Adaptec AHA-2930U2 Ultra2 SCSI card uses the WinXP-native driver file
aic78u2.sys. My WinXP is the Pro version, but there should be no difference
between Pro and Home editions.

There may be some differences between the 2930 and the 2930U2. I bought my
U2 just a few months before Win2K debuted. It came with Win98 drivers, but
the Win2K drivers were not available for a couple of months, when I was able
to download them from Adaptec. By the time WinXP arrived, the driver was
included on the WinXP CD-ROM. The original version (5.1.2600.0, dated
7/1/2001) is still working fine.

As I think I recall, the 2930 (no suffix) was a "lite" version supplied with
some kinds of SCSI hardware. How and when did you get this card?

When I searched Google for "adaptec+2930+driver", I got over 2,000 hits.
Then I clicked Groups and narrowed that to 1,700. The first hit is for the
very active peer-to-peer Usenet newsgroup comp.periphs.scsi. If you don't
find what you need, post your question there. That's where the SCSI gurus
hang out. They'll know. (Heck, I even spotted some of my 4-year-old posts
there, discussing my 2930U2 and Win2K.)

Are you actually having a problem with your 2930? Or just anticipating that
you might have a problem. If the card is plugged in (and enabled in your
computer's BIOS) when you install WinXP, Setup should detect it and install
the proper driver automatically. If WinXP is already installed, shut down,
plug the board into the PCI slot and reboot; it should be detected and
installed. If it's already installed with the wrong driver, go to Device
Manager and choose to Update driver - or Uninstall, then Scan for hardware
changes.

I'm guessing from Adaptec's list for 2930 family of SCSI host adapters list
at http://snipurl.com/4gpc that yours is their AHA-2930U. There download
page at http://snipurl.com/4gpf does not list Windows XP. However, it is
highly likely that the Windows 2000 driver would work. The differences
between Windows 2000 and XP are superficial or augmentative.

However, I have the 2940UW which uses the Windows XP supplied
Microsoft-signed driver at "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aic78xx.sys" (i.e.,
Adaptec had it certified and included in Windows).

Did Windows never detect the hardware (so it is NOT listed in Device Manager
under SCSI devices)? Or is it that there is an entry for it in Device
Manager but it has a circled exclamation mark to indicate that it is not
functioning?

During bootup and at the inital screen just past the POST where it shows
memory and drives detected, there is a table of devices and their interrupts
shown. Is your PCI adapter shown in that table? (You'll have to hit the
Pause key at the end of this table to keep it from scrolling off into
oblivion.)

Also check if the following file exists on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\inf\pnpscsi.inf

This text file (which exists on my system) has the entries for the
AHA-2930xx adapters.
