Cecilia

I am planning to dc promo a second server so that I have
it as a backup of my AD, in case that machine crashes. I
have one domain/one dc network.
Are there any articles that show the steps to do this?
Do I have to install dns on this second server? Are there
any other requisites to it?
Appreciate the help.
Thanks.

Cecilia,

To get started, I would point DNS to the first DC and run DCPROMO on the
new replica
After that point it is up to you as to if you want to host DNS on both
servers
If you decide to host DNS on both servers, I would change the TCP/IP
Properties to point to each other for dns in order to avoid DC islanding:

275278 DNS Server Becomes an Island When a Domain Controller Points to
Itself

Hope that helps

I don't really want to host DNS on both, I wasn't sure.
Do I have to set any kind of replication or is this done
automatically?

Think of it this way - you want the second server in case there is a problem
with the first one. If you only have DNS on the first one, DNS goes offline
with the first server in case of trouble. Without DNS your network is dead
anyway.

I would put DNS on the second DC as well. If you configure the zones as AD
integrated you don't need to configure anything special for DNS replication
(more than what you would do for DC to DC replication of AD).
