Does Windows Defender do a good job stopping ad ware, does anyone have any
recomendations for a good ad ware sweeper.? I used to use Ad-Ware free on my
XP for occasional sweeps , and it did a good job but I can't seem to find
it. I am also using Norton (the free 60 day trieal that was on my puter when
I bought it. Do I need more protection?

Thanks in advance

I use the personal version of AdWare SE also AVG free from Grisoft.com;
"Defender" is lacking in my opinion,YMMV.

AdAware SE/Win One Care has its own spyware scanner distinct from Win
Defender. They do fine for me.

Use Adaware, SpyBot and SpywareBlaster for anti-malware protection..

Also, do yourself a favor and uninstall Norton.. use a free AV solution like
AVG or Avast..

Good Post Mike! Those four products do a very good job Adaware Spybot
Spywareblaster & Avg. All are free tooo.
I also noticed on my machine running Vista 64 that SpywareBlaster will not
run with DEP on even if You put it in the exclude list.

Hi K.,
First I would recommend removing all shreds of anything Norton/Symantec.
IMHO, Eset's NOD32 is the best AV available and you may download a trial.
For adware/spyware I use SpySweeper and SpyBot (free). I live on the net
and I *never* encounter anything these programs won't detect. AAMOF, I
hardly ever use SpyBot because SpySweeper and NOD32 do such a great job.
SpyBot S&D = http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ SpySweeper =
http://www.webroot.com/ NOD32 = http://www.eset.com

How is it lacking to you? You can look at all programs currently running and
programs set to run at startup, and it can catch spyware as it installls (I
had it do this when I had turned UAC/IE Protected Mode off a while back. It
came up with a bit red box asking me if I wanted to remove or ignore the
spyware.

That spyware got on there because I tried to manually install a program that
was infected.

Since then I haven't found any spyware scanning with Adaware SE and Windows
Defender.
