ad-ware is not being deleted

Evrytime I try to delete an adware item, virtumodo, it continues to pop up. I
have tried removing it numeroud times, quarentine, and disabled the backup,
but Microsoft's program does not remove it for whatever reason. It's very
frustrating. I have the new version and it is up to date!

I ran into this one last Wednesday.

I was able to clean it succesfully with a combination of an up-to-date AVG
antivirus, Microsoft Antispyware (both used in safe mode)--and some registry
cleaning by hand.

I used a simple four-line registry merge file I found at castlecops, and
also a hand search of the registry for MSEVENTS.

I'm not able to put my "hands" on that registry merge file at the moment,
I'm afraid.

This adware seems to be associated with the presence of an older version of
Sun's Java.

This URL checks your installed version of JRE.
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

JRE 5.0 Update 5, is the current.

You can update your java version to current by going to http://java.com and
hitting the link in the upper left. After downloading the newest version
you should go to add or remove programs and remove all previous
versions--check carefully--they are not all listed together necessarily--the
naming convention changed.

I am having the exact same problem. I've tried spybot as well as Microsoft's
program. Can someone help us?

Sorry about the previous (blank) post. Wasn't paying attention.

I had the same problem with SLAGENT. Antispyware alerted me to it, cleaned
it and, even after a full scan, the threat re-appeared next time the computer
was turned off (and it hadn't been connected to the internet in the meantime).

I then installed Lavasoft's, ADWARE, and ran a scan. The problem has
disappeared completely.

Ian--the current state of the beta product is apparently as you are
experiencing it--i.e. good detection, not so good cleaning.

For the time being, I guess my recommendation is going to be to 1) provide
feedback via suspected spyware reports that cleaning is not working, and 2)
choose a different product to get cleaning done.

It is still worthwhile advice to use both updated antivirus and Microsoft
Antispyware in safe mode--but there may well be more cases where third party
apps do the job better.
