AD upgrade question

I have run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from my ONLY Windows
2000 SP4 DC. I am trying to add a Windows 2003 R2 DC to the mix (because I
need to replace said 2K DC). Everytime I run DCPROMO on the new R2 box I
get the message which tells me I haven't run adprep.

Should I be able to upgrade the directory and then install a 2k3R2 DC? Or
do I need to upgrade the 2K DC to 2003 first?

Any help would be appreciated.
