AD Sites and Replication

We have a new AD with a site in PA (main HQ), and WAN links in LA and FL.
I brought up a new AD controller in my PA site for a NY site, and noticed in
AD sites and Services, it was added under the FL site. I moved it back into
the PA site.

The former admin had subnets defined, but there's only Default Site Link
listed in the Inter-Site Transports.

I noticed in the NTDS settings, that the newly created NY site is
<automatically generated> replicating with FL. It looks like the LA site is
also <automatically generated> replicating with FL.

Question is, why do the new AD controllers get added to the FL wan site, and
why is the KCC setting everything to use the FL site?

Do I need to create site links between each subnet, then manually set the
replication?

Thank you

Hi,

You need to determine if the admin defined the subnets to the sites
correctly.
If the domain controller is created after the site is created, the
server is placed automatically in the correct site (based on IP
address).

When you create a site, you need to associate a subnet to the site.
You will also have to create, or use a site link to link the sites
together. I would not recommend to manually set up a bridgehead server
and I would not create manual connection objects.
Let the KCC create the auto generated connection objects.
Remember....not all DC's have to talk to all the DC's.

Thanks for the link - I'll read through that. It looks like the subnets are
there - and I noticed it looks like there were manual connections set-up
between the PA and FL sites. I'll have to think about this one............

Hi,

We are trying to build a new site for our Active Directory structure. The
Active Directory is Windows 2000 server based and it was migrated from
Windows NT.

The subnets must be defined and assinged to the correct
sites.
I notice in the First Default Site under Active Directory Site and
Services,
the site licensing server still points to the old NT PDC.
With the new site we recently build, we don't have any entry on the site
licensing server.

There should be at least one Site Licensing per Site to
follow MS recommendations.

Generally you should NOT have any manual connections
(they are a very special case) but rather sufficient Site
LINKS so that the KCC sets up the connections automatically.
