ad restore password

The previous admin has left and I would like to find out the ad restore
password on a 2000 DC, not change it
Know of any good secure way to recover it.

Short of "cracking" you own DC-SAM (not the AD) you cannot.

In Win2000 it can be changed even when booted as a DC.

Call the old Admin and ask him.
 
Not to be picky but don't you mean W2K3? ;)
....a thought, upgrade and change it.....

Yes, I meant Win2003 in this sentence:

Should read:

And that isn't picky at all -- even though it was a typo it changes
the entire meaning and was misleading.
