I have an win2k network with one Schema master (AD) with
hardware error. I need to performe the format this domain,
and I think to upgrade to win2003.

How can I formar the AD without loss my child domains, or
how can I reinstall this entries again ???

If your root domain only has one DC then you can create a
new DC and make it a DC in the Root domain. Then transfer
the FSMO roles from the original DC that needs rebuilt.
If the failing DC has no other apps running on it, i.e.
DNS, then you could safely DCPROMO it down to a member
server and then remove the server object out of AD. Then
after giving time for replication to let the rest of AD
know that the object has been removed rebuild it.

If you have more than one DC in the root domain then
simply transfer the FSMO roles and DCPROMO the failing DC
down to a member server, remove the server object from AD
and then wait for replication. After replication has
occured rebuild the server.

You can either leave the FSMO roles on the other DC or
transfer them back to the newly built server.

Hi,

This KB can help you tranferring the role:

HOW TO: View and Transfer FSMO Roles in Windows Server 2003 WGID:493
ID: 324801

Thanks.
