We have three domain controllers called Key1, Key2 and Key3.

If I right click on My Computer and check the Network Identification tab, it
shows the FQDN key1.domain.co.uk

However if I go to AD Sites and Services, I see three servers, key2, key3
and D5Z8QH! What happened to Key1? Can I use Rename without issues?

Are you saying that D5Z8QH is the name of Key1 (or was the name at some
point)?

Perhaps Key1 is just not listed...

Try running DCDiag on all DCs first and search for FAIL, WARN, ERROR.

A DC name cannot be changed under Win2000 (or except under special rules
in Win2003)

Thanks for your reply.

I am saying that if I look under AD Sites and Services I do not see Key1, I
see it named as D5Z8QH instead. I can only guess that at some point this
was the name this server had? Perhaps it came preinstalled from Dell with
that name?

IPCONFIG /ALL shows that the server name is key1. AD Sites and Services
shows it as D5Z8QH. Can I right click on it in AD S&S and rename without
problems?

Yes, if that is the only place it is messed up -- but (and only if) are you
sure it's
the same server?

Hi Herb.

Yes, there are only three servers in that domain. I know it's the right
server, but don't know how the name came to be like that.

Thanks, Neal
