Hi

I am trying to install the AD on a new Windows 2003 Server, but I am running
into the error message

"Overlapped I/O operation is in progress."

Here is what I have selected
-------------------
Configure this server as the first domain controller in a new forest of
domain trees.

The new domain name is server.company.local. This is also the name of the
new forest.

The NetBIOS name of the domain is SERVER

Database folder: C:\WINDOWS\NTDS
Log file folder: C:\WINDOWS\NTDS
SYSVOL folder: C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL

The DNS service will be installed and configured on this computer. This
computer will be configured to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS
server.

The password of the new domain administrator will be the same as the
password of the administrator of this computer.
-------------------

When I press the Next button and the AD configuration process is started I
get the "Overlapped I/O operation is in progress." error after about 5
seconds.

Any ideas what the reason could be?

Thanks,
Bo

This is unlikely to be directly related to AD -- it is probably a BIOS,
Disk, Disk controller or most likely disk driver problem.

It is not a common problem. I would search MS Technet or MS
"collection" at google:

[ "overlapped * operation * progress" microsoft: ]

....unfortunately it only returned on hit and that was just a list which
indicted the error and number. (997L)

Next I would look at upgrading the disk controller driver, service
packs, and quite likely the BIOS. (Many odd errors in the OS are
actually caused by out of date BIOS or bad drivers, not the OS
itself.)

In addition to Herb's response, take a look at this:

Interesting that the Google search missed this one. It's six months old
so clearly it has time to be indexed.

Disturbing actually.

Less disturbing but this one probably should have been caught too.

Thanks for the answers. I have now managed to solve the problem. After I got
the W2K3 server up and running I installed F-Secure Server Anti-Virus,
before continuing configurating the system. After running into problems I
had stopped all F-Secure Windows processes, but that still did not help.
After reading the tips you gave me I opened the Computer Mangement and
selected to view hidden devices. Under the 'Non-Plug and Play drivers' I
found four drivers belonging to F-Secure. One of those was F-Secure File
System Filter. I disabled these four drivers and after that I was able to
install the AD. When the AD was installed I was able to enable the
Anti-Virus software again and everything works OK.

Thanks,
Bo

That's how I actually found that info.
