I have Active Directory and DNS setup and running on 7
Windows 2000 servers and with only Windows O/S 2000
professional clients. With all 2000 Pro clients getting
their IP addresses through DHCP, is WINS needed to be set
up and running as a service on the network?
Does anyone know of any articles relating to the Pros &
Cons of this specific topic?

Thanks for your help and assistance.

WINS is not necessarily needed unless you are running multiple subnets and
applications that require NetBIOS resolution. This does include Network
Neighborhood, NetBIOS will not pass over multiple subnets through NAT, such
as if you have multiple remote sites.
However, you can browse through Active Directory, if the shares on the
remote sites are published in AD. IMO, I prefer this method because then
only the shares published in AD can be browsed in Nethood. You can still
browse the shares on a particular machine by using its FQDN in your browser
(\\server.example.com\sharename) provide the browser has rights to the share
and ACL.

If you still rely on the network browsing then WINS is required.

Thank you,
