Each time I double click Ad-Aware SE from my desktop Windows Vista
configures the program like it's installing it. It puts the Ad-Aware folder
in the Programs folder each time so it appears it's installing it again even
though I haven't uninstalled it.

Any ideas,
James

May I ask what aspects of the "default" operating system configuration you
have altered? It may have an influence on your problem.

I haven't altered any, I don't believe. I disabled some uneeded services.
This is the only program that this occurs with. If it was an operating
system aspect wouldn't it occur with more than one program?

James,
You may have to un-install then make certain the directory is gone then
re-install.
I just installed the Personnel version about 4 days ago, and downloaded
the updates
with no problems. Have run it several times, and it is not trying to
re-install each
time.

OK. If you right click on the desktop icon and view the properties, what it
the file name? I am thinking that maybe you have the actual installer on the
desktop where it should never be. The desktop should not be used for
installation programs. It is for shortcuts to programs that have already
been installed.

Can you check?.

It appears the program is intent on having it's links in the Programs start
menu. I'm using the classic start menu and everytime I delete the Ad-Aware
link from the Programs menu it wants to install itself. I try to keep the
Programs folder clean otherwise I'd be all day trying to find software.

If the the programs initial installation used Windows Installer, this can
occur, but not always. That is, the programmer has programmed a Windows
Installer "patch" to make sure certain elements of the install have remained
in place when the program is run. I've seen this with other programs, but
it's rare; (I've even seen instances where you can't delete the icon, short
of uninstalling the program, but this is even rarer).

If you right-click the icon for Ad-Aware in the Start Menu, and choose
Properties, is the entry for "Target:" grayed out, as well as the buttons
for "Open File Location" and"Change Icon..."? If they are, it's a special
Windows Installer type icon. This alone, is not a problem, but it may use
an invoked patch...

Manually creating the shortcut worked. Thanks much.
I thought it might have beeen something I changed in the OS and didn't
remember as Richard asked.
