Hi Experts;
Running ActiveX programs like http://safety.live.com (OneCare Full Service
Scan) starts the scan for Viruses and Spyware, but only goes to about 6% and
the computer freezes. You can't move the mouse cursor or do a Ctl+Alt+Del.
The computer is completely locked up. I have tried other sites like
Trendmicro (Housecall) with similar results. The computer locks up. I have
tried the sfc /scannow, but this has NOT solved the problem.

Running Windows XP Home Edtion Service Pack 2, Pentium 4 CPU 2.26GHz, 768 MB
RAM, all Microsoft Updates have been done.

How can I solve this freezing problem. Your reply would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks....

Try one of these Virus Removal Tools:

Avast! One tool for any current virus
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Symantec Virus Removal Tools
http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/removaltools.jsp

F-Secure Virus Removal Tools

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tools

You are going to these sites to trust them to fix any virus you have. It
follows from that, that you can trust them not to give you a virus. You,
therefore, can afford to drop your security restrictions for running activeX
(for that site)
Add the site to your trusted zone, or if it is not an https: site, drop the
activeX security setting for the Internet Zone to none before going to the
site.
IE, Tools menu, Options, Security tab. Internet Zone icon, Custom Level
button.

Hi Mark;
Thanks for the reply. I dropped the Internet Zone to "Medium" as this is as
low as it goes. There is no option for setting it to "None". I tried to run
the Microsoft Online Scanner again and it again stopped at 6%, freezing the
computer. Any other ideas?

That's what I meant by the "Custom Level" button. There are radio buttons to
'enable'. You might also have other security in force, like the popup
blocker, or an "Advanced" tab checkbox of one kind or another in IE, options.

Hi Elmo;
Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded and ran the Avast! One tool for any
current virus checker. It completed the scan without freezing the computer
and reported that there are zero (0) infected. I guess I willtry some of the
others that you suggested. Any other ideas?

Hi Mark;
I compared the "Custom Level" settings with another computer that work and
all the setting are the same. I do NOT have any trouble accessing the sites,
just a problem of freezing after running to about 6% of the "Full Service
Scan" on Microsoft's site (http://safety.live.com). Anything else to try?
Thanks....

You might have some luck trying the Cleanup Manager to clear things like the
IE T.I.F cache., or %TEMP%

start/run, type:
cleanmgr

Hi Mark;
I have done the Disk Cleanup, Full Defragmentation, downloaded and ran
"ccleaner.exe" with default setting, downloaded and ran Ad-Aware 2007. None
of this has helped.

Open Internet Options, click the Settings button, View Objects, Details
View, and either Remove or Repair any damaged object.

Hi Elmo;
Okay, I went to Internet Options, Clicked on Setting under Browing History,
Viewed Objects and all just showed that they were "Installed". None showed as
damaged or requiring repair. I then went back and deleted all Tempory
Internet Files including Off line ones. Tried to run the "Full Service Scan"
of the Microsoft Safety Scanner and again it stopped at 6% and the computer
froze...

You might try another browser as a test to see if IE is damaged.

A few fixes for IE. Register these .dll's and see if that helps:

Click Start button, Run command and type in the text box:

(Click [OK] or Hit [Enter] on your keyboard after each line.)

regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

Regsvr32 /i ole32.dll

Regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Regsvr32 mshtml.dll

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

regsvr32 jscript.dll

Also type SFC /SCANNOW and check for damaged system files.

Hi Elmo;
You may be on to something here. I followed your instructions to register
the dll files and two of them had error messages.

Regsvr32 /i ole32.dll returned an Error Message: "ole32.dll was loaded, but
the DllInstall entry point was not found. This file can not be registered."

Regsvr32 mshtml.dll returned an Error Message: "mshtml was loaded, but the
DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered.

What does these messages mean and how do we resolve these Error Messages?
Thanks.....

Hi Elmo;
Sorry, I forgot to tell you that I have ran the "sfc /scannow" twice and it
did ask me for the Windows XP Home Edition CD which I did put into the CD
Drive. Thanks..

Usually this means that particular .dll didn't need to be registered,
but I'm pretty sure those two do.. Here's an MSKB article on causes for
the error.
