Hopefully someone can assist me with this problem I am having. I am
currently running windows XP and I have not downloaded service pack 2 yet. I
run internet explorer 6. I tried clicking on update windows, so that I could
download service pack 2 and any other updates needed and I received a message
saying "Your current security settings prohibit running activeX controls on
this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly". I did a search
on this problem and I tried all the different security settings I could find,
but no luck. Please any assitance would be great.

I am also having a second problem and i'm not sure if they are related. I
downloaded directX 9.0c from microsoft. I then double clicked on the file to
install and I receive a message that says "A cabinet file necessary for
installation cannot be trusted" with a ok button. Any help will be
appreciated.

Thanks for reading,
Steve

Hi Steve :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Set your Security to Med.

Hi Jan, I did exactly what you said below except for the message "Allow
active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service Pack 2:"
I don't have service pack 2 installed yet. I tried to locate Allow active
content to run in files on my computer, but could not locate. I tried to
update windows again with no success. I received the same message about
activeX .

Hi Steve :-)

Then it appears that something then is blocking it somewhere. Let's take
care of the first problem you mentioned and see if it helps with the second.
If not, then we can look at that afterward, but, I'll check it out while you
work through the following. :-)

1. Try temporarily disabling your firewall to see if HTTPS then works
correctly.
2. You may have other software installed that is blocking ActiveX content.
3. An option in anti-spyware software you installed and enabled.
4. Could be a BHO (browser helper object) that you installed to provide
additional protection; use BHO Demon to see them, or use Spybot's tools to
list them.
5. You may have used SpywareBlaster to install kill switches in the registry
so certain ActiveX controls will not run, and you've hit one of those
malware AX controls.
6. It may be that you installed lots of other stuff that will affect the web
over which IE has no control.

also......

If you have Norton anything, disable it, or better, uninstall it, and see if
that helps. If not, then you can reinstall it. Also check for and disable
any flash, micromedia, ActiveX blockers, or popup blockers in any 3rd party
toolbars, such as Google, MSN or Yahoo toolbars or the Yahoo Companion. If
you have Companion, uninstall it as it has been know to cause a variety of
problems.

If you have McAfee:

Disable the McAfee ActiveX controls Applet filters in the Internet Filter
window when you select Customize your VShield settings

page. As a result pages may not display correctly."

Now, here's a little test that will let you know if your ActiveX is working
or set properly:

When you first open the site you'll get a box that asks if your want to

select Medium Safety. Click OK.
A prompt box will now appear asking "Warning... Are you sure you want to
change the security settings for this zone? Yes/No." Click Yes.
Click OK.

It is also very possible that You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or
parasites on your system causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running
your updated anti-virus program, you should do the following to be sure none
of these are present on your system. Although you may have already run one
or more of the programs, please do so again according to the instructions
below. Some variants of malware can replicate themselves over and over if
not removed properly. Please follow all instructions carefully to be sure
your system is
thoroughly cleaned:

How to make a good newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

I have the same problem and it happened in the middle of windows
updating, no other software can be responsible

I have tried several solutions seen above in this group to no avail,
Here are the details of what happened, note at the end the registering
of dlls which triggered the latest mess, I previously posted them on the
update newsgroup:

Last week I updated this Win2k system including the GDI detection tool
(KB973374). It sent me immediately to the office 2000 update, the reboot
notice for windows update got buried. So I rebooted after all the updates.

Then when I returned to windows update there were 3 additional critical
updates (KB841356, 840987, 841533). They downloaded, appeared to
install, then I get a failure notice: No Updates were installed, updates
failed to install.

I tried them one at a time ortogether and they fail.
I installed less important updates and tried again and they fail
Installed DirectX 9.0c end-user runtime and tried again and not only do
they fail, but DirextX shows up again in update.

so now I have 3 critical updates failing to install and DirectX
installing perfectly but not registring as such.

so then I follow some instructions regarding reregistering dlls which
makes things worse: when I go to windows update I get "Your current
security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page"
followed by a page saying I need administrator priviledges. I am using
the administrator account and tried various solution to the active X
thing, reset security to medium, it was but..., I set windows update up
as a trusted site, nothing works (although I am not sure I have the
right sites and https settings).

any ideas how to fix this?

Hi Marko :-)

Wow! You poor thing!! All that and it still does not work!

I'm not sure at this point what may be the actual culprit, but, we first
need to know what you have and don't have for sure. You may have to run a
Repair, but, let's try other steps first, as it may not be necessary.

OK...here is a free, small utility that will tell you everything you might
need to know about your computer and system. Download, install and run it.
If you can download from the Internet, try to find another machine and
download it to a floppy or burn it to a CD, then copy it to your hard drive
and install it there.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Once you run it, then check the list of updates the Windows Updates say you
still need. Check here for some downloads you can save to the hard drive to
install from there in Safe Mode.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=7
Installing from Safe Mode insures that there are no other programs or
activities operating in the background to interfere, and you are not working
through Windows. It often is the best way to install anything to get a good
clean install.

Next.....go to your Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall
the Direct X. It can be reinstalled later.

Additionally, if you have not done all the steps that I provided for Steve,
you should do so as well. Some scumware that has managed to remain hidden
can be brought out when SP2 is installed.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.
