Can anyone please help us! We all appear to be having the same problems and
I see the same questions posted over and over again. We are recieving an
error message when we try to run certain programs through IE, when I run
Norton Antivirus I also recieve this message and when we all use IE on the
internet.
Your current security setting prohibit running activex controls on this
page..."

We've been told to manually change our security setting and we've done that.
We have been told to fix our comcat.dll but there is nothing wrong with it.
I have completely run out of options...

Can anyone on this site help? If not is there someway to contact Microsoft
because I think there must be something wrong with XP. I have talked to
Gateway, Norton, the makers of a program that runs on IE, and a local
computer tech and none have been able to fix the problem, they all reached
the conclusion that something is definantely wrong but that they can't fix
it. Help!

Hi Andrew :-)

Try the following information and see if it will help:

Clearing the TIF Cache -

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

or...........

Disable the Script Debugger in IE (Line 142) - Win XP

also...

"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this
page. As a result pages may not display correctly."
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/acxen.htm

This can happen if the Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins setting is disabled
for the My Computer Zone. Follow these steps to disable the restriction.

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0

In the right-pane, double-click the value 1200 and change it's value to 0
(if it has a different value than 0)

Be sure your Java is "Enabled."

To enable Java, take these steps:
Internet Explorer User:
From the Menu bar, select Tools.
Select Internet Options.
Select Security.
Internet.
Click Custom Level.
Scroll down the Security Settings box to Microsoft VM, then Java Permission,
select Medium Safety. Click OK.
A prompt box will now appear asking "Warning... Are you sure you want to
change the security settings for this zone? Yes/No." Click Yes.
Click OK.

You may have other software installed that is blocking ActiveX content.

If you have SpywareBlaster: You may have used SpywareBlaster to install kill
switches in the registry so certain ActiveX controls will not run, and
you've hit one of those
malware AX controls.

Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service

If you have Zone Alarm Pro:

Try adding your IE browser to your Programs list anew. Go to your Programs
List, locate IE, right click on it, then click to 'remove'. Make sure your
ZASS program alerts are on then open IE. You should get an 'access' program
alert, click allow and the 'remember this' box.

Hope this helps :-)

There is nothing wrong with Windows XP, other than the fact that it even has
such a dangerous scripting application as "DestructiveX", better known as
ActiveX. It is the reason that there are so many drive-by downloads and
browser hijacks.

Not to worry, your installation is safe, or you would not be getting those
"error" messages; which are really just status alerts; letting you know that
the site you are on does not have the proper permission to execute
potentially dangerous scripts.

There are two solutions; the dangerous one, which is to lower your script
permissions enough to allow sites to run scripts on your computer. Alas,
that will open you up for drive-by downloads and browser hijacks.

The second, and better solution is to decide if you really trust the site to
run scripts. If so, just add it to your "Trusted Sites" zone. Tools >
Internet Options > Properties > Security > Trusted sites; "Sites..." button.
If necessary, remove the check from the "Https only" button. Add the url of
the site to the list. You can loosen up the Custom level for the Trusted
sites zone, and tighten up the Custom level for the Internet zone.

You may still see those alerts for sited not trusted; but that is all a part
of the security game. Or...use a better browser.

Jan,
Thanks for the tips and I have tried them all and they all seem to have done
what they were supposed to do but I'm afraid none of them fixed the problem.
Can you think of anything else I can try. Also, you mentioned removing IE
from my program list, I didn't fully understand that one so I haven't done
it. Did you mean from the start menu? Thanks again for trying to tackle my
problem!

Hi Andrew :-)
Jan,

No no...that is only *if* you have Zone Alarm Pro...and it was to add the
browser to the Program list.

If you don't have Zone Alarm Pro then you can ignore this.
**********************************************************

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>
Check the box next to "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
reboot)
OK out and then reboot.

If this resolves the problem see the information here and follow the
instructions to clean the malware from your system:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

If it does not resolve the problem, continue with the information below

Try disabling the Norton to see if that helps. Also, do you have any 3rd
party ad or popup blockers on your system? Google or Yahoo toolbar? Yahoo
companion? If so, disable them, or for Yahoo Companion, uninstall it.

and..

Then go into IE > Tools > Internet Options >Security > Custom Level and
disable everything under ActiveX Controls and Plugins.
