ActiveX component can't create object

I am trying to use the Get External Data option from the Access 2000 file menu, to import an Excel spreadsheet file. I select the menu option, and then navigate to the correct folder and file. After I select the Excel spreadsheet to import, however, I get the following error message:

ActiveX component can't create object

After I click on the window to cancel the message, a form comes up (apparently part of the "import wizard") that is empty of any fields or anything on it.

What does this error message mean? What is causing it? And what can I do to get rid of it? (Or, better yet, is there another way to import an Excel spreadsheet into Access 2000???)

For any positive answers, please copy to the following E-mail address, if possible, as I don't always have access to this Newsgroup.

See whether the solution in http://www.mvps.org/access/bugs/bugs0007.htm at
"The Access Web" works for you. (For Access 2000, you'll be looking for
dao360.dll, not dao350.dll)
