Hello,

I have a couple of clients who when they go to update.microsoft.com for the
first time they don't get that activex bar. It gets them to the page that
lets them know they need to click on the activex bar but they don't actually
have the activexbar so they can't go any further. I set all their security
zones for the default and all options in ie as default. My only solution
was to log in as a different user. Is there a way if I see this again to
correct it for that user?

Hi Boe :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, by the 'activex
bar', are you referring to the Information Bar in XP SP2, that comes up
along the top of the window in the Windows Update and you have to click on
the 'Click here', to allow the ActiveX to be installed?

If so, then try the following and see if it helps:

First go to the top IE menu bar and click View,
then check that the Status Bar is check marked.

Then check the information here and see if it helps:

How to Use the Internet Explorer Information Bar
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_infobar.mspx:

The information bar is related to downloads, pop ups and Active X. Is it
checked in every instance? Check to see which setting(s) you checked?

If this happened after installing KB896688 (MS05-052), the latest
Cumulative Update for IE? If yes, try the following:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

Also, see the new released KB article

which is referred to *now* in the revised Security Bulletin 05-052.

Dear Jan,

I dont know if you'll see this, but I'd like to thank you for helping me
with a problem that has been dogging me for several days now (I've nearly no
hair left!). It wasn't directly related to this problem, but this post rang
a bell. (See my post in Maintenance & Repair forum). Your advise re the
OLEFix below solved the problems I've been having. Top advise! Thank you.

Hi Boe :-)

Thank you for the clarification and version information.

Disable all popup blockers and see if that allows the popup to return. Check
your AV or any 3rd party toolbars or software that may have popup or ad
blockers.

If you have Zone Alarm Pro, make sure the Mobile Code in the Privacy
settings is not enabled.

also..

Go to Tools>Internet Options> Security tab
Click on the Trusted Sites icon>
Click the Sites button and then add the site
http://update.microsoft.com.

Close Internet Options and open Internet Explorer
Browse to update microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

You may be asked to install a new ActiveX component in which case follow the
prompts and do so.

If still not joy, try the following:

Go to Tools>Internet Options> Security tab
Click on the Internet icon and then click the Custom Level button

See if the following is set:
Under the ActiveX controls and plug-ins
Put a check next to each of the following as indicated:
Enable "Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls"
Prompt "Download signed ActiveX controls"
Prompt "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins"

Under downloads:
Enable "Automatic prompting for file downloads"

You may need to restart IE for the changes to take effect

Also, check out the other information that I provided in my first reply.

Hope this helps.

As an additional resource, I am cross-posting your problem to the Windows
