Active X

Many years ago I seem to remember reading somewhere
that active X could mean trouble, so I always said no if
something wanted to use or install it. Now I seem to be
having a lot of trouble with Symantec recently, so I went
onto a Symantec help site and the first thing they wanted
to do was to install active X.

So is Active X now something benign?

TIA,

Nev.

Hi,

ActiveX controls are small programs that can be beneficial or malignant, the
option to install them is up to you as a result. They are used in concert
with web pages for interactive content. It's the same with any program that
wants to run on your computer. Just being an ActiveX control does not make
it bad. If you trust the site, it's probably ok to download and install
their control. The option to decide whether or not to install one came about
because of many "drive by" installations, where malicious controls were
installed by suspect sites just by visiting them. For obvious security
reasons, the default ActiveX setting now is to prompt the user for
permission to install.
