I am trying to download the new improved windows and office updater and the
active x information bar will not appear. I have followed the prompted
solutions (clear temp files, update trusted sites etc.) but none have solved
it.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mike :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, nor the sugeston that you got
from an MSFT, but, try the following and see if it helps:

Whatever AV you use, disable it, as a test, then try the update again.

Clear your Termporary Internet files.

Be sure that you have not turn off the Information Bar.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>click the Internet icon
Click Custom Level
Scroll down to the "Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls"
Click Prompt for ActiveX controls and plug-ins section of the list

also check the Registry settings:

Click Start>Run and type REGEDIT into the window
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Internet Settings \ Zones \ 3

In the right-pane, double-click 2200 and set it's value to 0 (REG_DWORD)

In the right-pane, double-click 2201 and set it's value to 0 (REG_DWORD)

Value data for 2200

0 - Automatic prompting for file downloads is Enabled
3 - Automatic prompting for file downloads is Disabled

Value data for 2201

0 - Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls is Enabled
3 - Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls is Disable

also....

Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Update site, and check any popup
or ad blocker
programs. Now check in IE Tools>Manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making
sure that
WuWebControlClass is enabled.

If the above appears to be in order, try re-registering these files, by
clicking
Start, Run and typing:-

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

You should receive a successful message after each one.

If you need to remove the Windows Update ActiveX controls and re-install

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike :-)

In addition to my previous suggestions:

Courtesy of Ottmar Freudenberger:

If this happened after installing KB896688 (MS05-052), the latest
Cumulative Update for IE, try the following:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that originates from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

I don't have the add on WuWebControlClass

the registry was ok. I had already downloaded the registry changes in
Otto's post.
I have cleared all the temporary files and have now turn off my Microsoft
firewall (ironic that MSFT did not tell me to do this.) and my Panda antivirus

still not working.

Hi Mike :-)

It is only on the Windows Upate that the Information Bar is not observed?
Are you getting any error messages when you try to download and the bar does
not appear?

I am not getting the bar at the office update or the windows update. There
is no message simply instruction on what to do if the bar does not appear and
what to do if it does so it it not triggering an error on the update server.

One time I had an error report return a message that I should do a virus
scan and referred me to the windows scan site and I couldn't get the windows
software to work because of an active x problem then.

I downloaded panda and have 3 spyware programs including the MSFT version
and did a system scan in safe mode and found the spyware that was causing
that problem. I don't think that has anything to do with the active x
problem. I tell that to give you an example of another active x problem at
the msft website.

I also downloaded and install ie7 beta in hopes of fixing this and it did not.

All this need for the new update software started when I got an error
message closing excel and the error message to me was to go get an office
update. I have been trying for two days to determine what that update is and
to get it. :)

If not for Access and some things I did in frontpage I would buy a mac
today. This is too much work just to get out spreadsheets.

Ok , google desktop search found some Norton files under a user
"administrator" that I had never set up. I guess that is a default user. I
wonder why those files were not under C drive in windows explorer?

Anyway, deleted them and everything is now working.

Thanks for the help.

Now I got to find out in the office group how to correct an "Internal error
2349" that I get whe I try to install the update to office that I now know I
need. :)
