Any chance of screen shot to explain this better? Im a little confused
about the phenomenon you are trying to explain.
I cant tell if you are saying there is a ghosted window in the background,
and it seems to contain whatever is on the screen at the time, even if you
minimized the application the image of the application remains, Or if you
are saying random applications appear to be running.

Subject: active window displayed on desktop
My XP desktop has an open window that displays an
application like EXCEL if I minimize the application
window. It is not open right after a reboot but will
eventually appear.
Any ideas?
