I hate to put out "plea" posts like this, but in this case
I am really over a barrel, and I'm sure there's an easy
fix, just trying to get it done before my client leaves
her office....

I have a Windows 2000 domain set up, and originally I had
two servers, both running WIndows 2000 Advanced Server.
One of the servers went out of service though, and it was
the PDC. I had originally thought that the two
automatically synched with one another, so there would be
no problem if one died, and that has pretty much been the
case, as I've had no problems... I did go through DCPROMO
on the old server and remove it from the domain before
putting it out of service.

I tried to add a new user account to the domain today, and
I got a message telling me that the user account will not
be available until it can be verified, presumably with the
domain controller that's no longer there. I did not
change the operations masters on server #2 and transfer
them over from server #1 before putting #1 out of service,
and I'm assuming I am now paying for that mistake...

Surely there must be a way to fix this, or do I just need
to kill the entire domain and then (Oh LORD) go back and
set up EVERY computer on the domain all over again?????
Thanks in advance for any help...

You can transfer the roles after the fact.
Check out the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows200.../en/advanced/help/sag_ADtransferFSMOroles.htm

This will tell you how to get server #2 to start playing the
various FSMO roles

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!

You are a lifesaver..... Thank you so VERY much! :)

The information on that site is concise and pretty clear, although
SLIGHTLY inaccurate, but I know what I'm doing so there was no
problem... I figured it out from what was there... Just a couple of
the commands had the wrong syntax or.... Maybe they were written for
NT or something and it's changed in 2000... Anyhow, it worked so far
and I thank you. I thought I'd never get an answer to that one so
quickly!

Best regards,

JIM

No problem. I knew what the problem was, so I just googled "active directory
seize roles" and that's the page I found. It looked like a decent write-up,
so I figured it would get you pointed in the right direction.

Saw the answer and I'm glad it worked for you! I'm just interested if
you had any problems dcpromoing the old server? Because, normally,
when you dcpromo the old server down, it would transfer all the FSMO
roles.

Cheers,

Cliff,

To my knowledge, I did not have any problems doing DCPROMO on the old
server... But that computer was a VERY OLLLLLLD piece of junk and I
was mainly using it to learn Windows 2000 Server. It was an old
Compaq 133Mhz (That's right... One hundred and thirty three.... LOL)
Actually, it ran most things okay, even IIS.... Of course, I could eat
a nice liesurely breakfast while I waited on the box to boot up, but
once up it did its job just fine.. .I was using it as a PDC for a
small network. When I built my "real" server, I thought I did
everything right when adding it to the network. Unfortunately, I
found out the hard way that I had not, after the fact. After I took
the old Compaq offline, I put Win98 SE back on it and gave it to the
kids. :) Thanks to everyone again for the help. :)
