I am in the process of moving a Single Active Directory
server to a new server (new Hardware). I found steps that
talk about restoring AD on a server but they seem to be
for servers that have crashed and not a complete hardware
change. My problem is that when I followed the recovery
of the Directory Services the reboot hung. I never was
able to get the server to accept the AD Restor.

Is there guidelines for moving single Domain AD systems to
new servers? I have in the past used the old AD to
replicate the AD info to the new server and then move my
data. The only problem I have seen with this is that I
have to touch every client so they see the correct server.
In Novell Netware we can move the DS to a new server,
Rename the server and then re-install the DS without
loosing data. Is this possible in Windows 2000 AD?

Thanks!

Then just use new machine and promote to DC and move all
the master role to new PC. After that demote the PC.

Back up system state on the old server, build the new
server (without joining the domain or installing active
directory.) Apply the service packs and patches. Restore
the system state of the old machine to the new machine.
PnP will detect hardware changes for you.

One thing you MUST check however is if you have non-
Microsoft Upper or Lower Filters on your hard drives in
the registry. If you do, remove them because when you
apply the system state to the new machine you might get a
STOP 7b error Inaccessible_Boot_Device.

Check in the registry of your old machine here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{
4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

That is the registry code for hard drives. Anything in the
upper or lower filters not 'PartMgr' or 'DiskPerf' remove.
