Currenlty my organizations runs a network as a workgroup and we want to move to a domain and I was wondering if it is possible to move to a domain on windows 2k server with out using active directory as I have heard that is a bear to administer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is (e-mail address removed)12.me.us. Thank you.

The installation of Active Directory is what changes a Win 2k
standalone/member server into a Domain controller. You can not have a Win 2k
domain without AD.

Hi Seth,

It is not possible to have a Windows 2000/2003 Domain without Active
Directory as it is an essential and inseparable part of the Windows
2000/2003 network architecture that improves on the domain architecture of
the Windows NT 4.0 operating system to provide a directory service designed
for distributed networking environments.

For you question about difficulty in administering, it actually simplifies
administration once everything is set.
